Wedding jewelry has been many things. It has signified ownership, participation in a clan and a simple pledge of faith and love. More recently, however, wedding rings have become status symbols. Often they seem to be elaborate testaments to consumerism and one-ups-man-ship rather than simple statements of love. The jewelry gets more and more ornate.
For years wedding rings were simple gold bands to underline the promises you made to one another. Sometimes engraved with a word from your wedding vows or a favorite poem, people wore them more as sign of promise than as a piece of jewelry.
Why might it be a good idea to return to the notion of a gold band? One reason might be the economy. Times are tough. You can get a beautiful wedding band today and decide in the years to come if you want to add a ring with a stone. But there are other more romantic reasons to consider a simple band:
Fine metal: while there are many fine metals, one of the wonderful things about gold is that it wears and develops a patina. This makes some people shrink in horror, but in fact, marriage also wears and develops a patina, and so do we as we grow into our beloved relationship.
Round: A simple band of gold symbolizes the eternity of the marriage.
Simple: Because you want to emphasize the essential in your relationship, not the layers that you attach to it.
Durable. Gold lasts. So will your love and your marriage if you stay true to your love.
So go ahead and consider your pocket book when you consider choosing the symbol that celebrates your very deep, and enduring love for one another that is the hallmark of your marriage.
